electric transmission aerial patrol

confidential client

the need

Electric transmission organizations manage hundreds of miles of assets across large geographies. To keep the system safe and reliable they perform aerial inspections to identify line, structure, and right-of-way issues. They use aerial inspections to cover more geography in a shorter amount of time. Our client had an existing aerial patrol solution built on an older Esri technology (ArcGIS Mobile) that was at the end of life. The solution met the original requirements.

The scope was to develop a new application with the following high-level requirements:

1. Track the flight to provide evidence of the inspection.

2. Improve workflow and interface to capture issues quickly while traveling 35-60 mph.

3. Ensure compatibility with clients existing Esri GIS platform.

4. Ensure that the solution can run disconnected.

5. Develop the solution on a modern and durable framework with room to expand.

the solution

The client and Patrick's Geospatial Services Team (GST) partnered to leverage Esri's modern mobile framework to provide an intuitive touchscreen mobile app that gives patrollers the ability to efficiently capture issues found on the infrastructure, along with their severity and categorization in as few taps as possible. Since the mobile application needs to run offline, all applicable data (assets, basemap) is synced to the device before leaving the office. Once the inspection is completed the data captured during the inspection is synced back to the enterprise GIS. The data synced includes issues found during the flight by the inspector and the flight track (breadcrumb trail). The flight track consists of the location and date/timestamp of the helicopter recorded for the entire flight. This is used for compliance reporting. With the data from the flight pushed back into the customers Esri Platform, the customer can leverage ArcGIS Online to collaborate with downstream workflows and mitigate the issues found.

the benefits

  • Solution is easy to use and causes few change management issues.

  • Improved workflow for the inspector results in quicker issue capture.

  • The modern framework provided growth for future field inspection work.

  • The solution fit into existing client architecture and was easy to deploy and support.
